Becky, you continue to amaze me with your gorgeous writing, profound insights, and most importantly, your joy seeking, even when it's the hardest. I love you, my friend.
Oh, Lisa, thank you for such generosity and kindness! It's a paradox, but the gift of the hard journey unwraps the beauty of life in every moment. Much love to you (and I'm hoping to be in Asheville sometime in May - would love to connect!) Take care of you!
Rebecca, though I have only met you once or twice at Susie’s getaways in Beaufort, I feel that I know you after reading your column ever since. The way you portray your relationship with Tom is as beautiful as any love story that I have ever read. Your willingness to be vulnerable to your readers is a precious gift and I find myself grieving with you each time I see one of his handsome pictures. Approaching my 90th birthday, I grieve for never having had such a love. My 11 year marriage ended in divorce, leaving me with two precious girls. I have led a full life but not having what you had with Tom makes me sad. I admire you greatly for sharing the richness, however short, of your special marriage.
I loved your book about Robert Smalls and wonder if you are currently working on another one. In the meantime, your online work has blessed this reader.
Donette, I remember meeting you here in Beaufort! So lovely to hear from you. Yes, Tom and I had a great love story - and how I wish it was longer. While I haven't written much about my first marriage, I will share with you that it was hard and ended in divorce after 25 years. I grieve those lost years, and at the same time I'm so thankful for my amazing sons. I was single for decade before I met Tom, and while we didn't get to celebrate beyond our 9th anniversary, I think we both sort of redeemed the gift of marriage for one another. I count myself both blessed and lucky (I don't think they're the same thing) and I am so grateful. All the best to you, Donette. Thank you for connecting and for your kind words!
Thank you for this beautiful piece, it so described my experience as well
